New Music: Mikkey Halsted x Lupe Fiasco x Jim Lavigne – Gone

As a Chicago native, I can’t help but be disgusted by the violence in my city. There is NOTHING humorous or glamorous about having the highest murder rate in the country. So in honor of that, Mikkey, Lupe, and Jim decide to speak up about it. And I can’t help but give this track the spotlight of the day. RIP to everyone killed during that weekend.

In light of “37 SHOOTINGS, 46 VICTIMS & 9 MURDERS” during Chicago’s first ‘warm’ weekend, the Trayvon travesty, 6-year old Aliyah Shell, and in honor of my cousins Ismail & Malik that were gunned down last summer…I felt as though this was the time to drop this song. Shouts to Lupe for helping me paint a vivid picture of what goes on everyday in Chicago and every other ghetto in America. Also, shouts to David ‘D.A.’ Doman & Jim LaVigne for providing us the perfect canvas to paint upon.

Special Dedication to Blair Holt and the hundreds of CPS students lost to senseless violence.

WE CAN NO LONGER WAIT FOR OTHERS, SEEMINGLY UNAFFECTED BY OUR ISSUES, TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS FOR US. SPEAK OUT AND SAY SOMETHING, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, DO SOMETHING.

Album Review: Lupe Fiasco–L.A.S.E.R.S (Release Date: March 8, 2011)

In an effort to remain excited, I didn’t crack open the entire L.A.S.E.R.S album until this morning. If you all did not know, I am a major Lupe fan, so I have been awaiting this album for a while now. So let the ripping begin….

Like Blueprint 3, I decided to dissect each track for the Hip Hop heads like myself; besides, Lupe deserves it.

1. Letting Go ft. Sarah Green–Great use of instruments, so good look to The Future for production. Not too much of a fan of the rock/alternative/hip hop sound for Lupe, but it works for this song. It is lyrically descent, no ground breaking phrases or witty lines. Which is what I was expecting with his recent releases, but I must say, adding Sarah Green was a great addition to the song, she actually saves the creativity of the production in the end.

2. Words I Never Say ft. Skylar Grey–One of his earlier releases, so I’m pretty sure you all know what its about. I’m all for political gestures in Rap and Hip Hop because that was what we were founded on, so I can’t really fault Lu for that. On the contrary, this production is hideous to me, but not as bad as some of the other productions.

3. Till I Get ThereNo, I’ll pass. I passed a few times. Let me give this a chance right? That’s what life is about…chances. After repeatedly listening to this track, I have come to the conclusion that I just won’t get the lyrics that I was looking for. It has a couple corny punchlines, but I’m not sold on his content for this one.

Ok, maybe I’m just a jerk, I’m taking my anger out from this annoying  beat on the lyrics…they aren’t that bad. I guess.
